Frequently Asked Questions
How do I start transcribing?
Hold your hotkey (default: Fn) from any app and speak. Let go when you're finished talking, and what you said gets typed out for you.
Do I need an internet connection?
Only for the initial model download during setup. After that, Push to Transcribe works fully offline. All transcription happens locally on your device.
Which devices are supported?
Push to Transcribe runs on Mac and Windows. Mac: Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) running macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) or later - Intel Macs are not supported. Windows: Windows 10 or later, 64-bit, with GPU acceleration via Vulkan.
Which transcription engine should I use?
Whisper offers the highest accuracy with on-device AI transcription, and is available on both Mac and Windows. Apple Speech (Mac only) is ultra-fast and uses Apple's built-in speech recognition. Try what's available on your platform and see which fits your workflow.
The text isn't appearing at my cursor. What's wrong?
Push to Transcribe needs permission to type into your other apps. On Mac: go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and make sure Push to Transcribe is enabled. On Windows: approve the permission prompts shown on first run. The onboarding flow guides you through this on either platform.
Can I change the hotkey?
Yes. Open Push to Transcribe settings and go to the Settings tab. You can set any keyboard shortcut you prefer.
How do I use the menu bar recorder?
On Mac, a live waveform appears in your menu bar while recording - left-click it to stop and transcribe, right-click to cancel. On Windows, the same controls appear in a floating recording indicator.
What languages are supported?
whisper.cpp supports 100+ languages. Apple Speech supports the languages configured in your macOS settings. You can select your preferred language in the app settings.
Is my audio data private?
Absolutely. All audio processing happens locally on your device. No audio or text is ever sent to any server. Read our Privacy Policy for the full details.
Can I get a refund?
Push to Transcribe is sold directly, not through any app store. To request a refund, email [email protected]. There's also a 14-day free trial (no credit card, no signup) so you can be sure it's right for you before you buy.
